An authorized portrait of one of Silicon Valley's most dynamic entrepreneurs evaluates his role in the successes of such innovations as Tesla and Space X while evaluating America's technological competitiveness.

In the spirit of Steve Jobs and Moneyball, Elon Musk is both an illuminating and authorized look at the extraordinary life of one of Silicon Valley’s most exciting, unpredictable, and ambitious entrepreneurs—a real-life Tony Stark—and a fascinating exploration of the renewal of American invention and its new “makers.”

Elon Musk spotlights the technology and vision of Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur and innovator behind SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity, who sold one of his Internet companies, PayPal, for $1.5 billion. Ashlee Vance captures the full spectacle and arc of the genius’s life and work, from his tumultuous upbringing in South Africa and flight to the United States to his dramatic technical innovations and entrepreneurial pursuits.

Vance uses Musk’s story to explore one of the pressing questions of our age: can the nation of inventors and creators who led the modern world for a century still compete in an age of fierce global competition? He argues that Musk—one of the most unusual and striking figures in American business history—is a contemporary, visionary amalgam of legendary inventors and industrialists including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Howard Hughes, and Steve Jobs. More than any other entrepreneur today, Musk has dedicated his energies and his own vast fortune to inventing a future that is as rich and far-reaching as the visionaries of the golden age of science-fiction fantasy.

Thorough and insightful, Elon Musk brings to life a technology industry that is rapidly and dramatically changing by examining the life of one of its most powerful and influential titans.

Do yourself and read immediately if you have any interest in technology, space travel, or the future of humankind in general. A fascinating deep dive into one of the most complex minds alive today. This isn't just a book that talks about how great he is, but instead jumps into the good and the bad, and how they both come together to create the man that accomplishes great feat after great feat.

Great bibliography about a fascinating man. I highly suggest this to anyone interested in business, technology, and the hope for mankind. Musk is a unique man that will do anything for the good of humans. This book is well-written and interesting.

If you want to gain some understanding of what makes Elon Musk tick, this is the book for you. He is driven by the need to make the world a better, cleaner place. With Tesla Motors, he is on the verge of giving the world a viable, mass-produced electric car, and with Solar City, an inexpensive and effective way for individuals to harness the power of the sun for their energy needs. Yet he doesn't stop there. His backup is Space-X, the purpose of which is developing a way to make humans extra-terrestrial if we can't make the planet livable. Musk has been compared to Steve Jobs, but in terms of his vision for humanity, Musk leaves Jobs far behind.

Interesting read about a very driven individual.

An interesting quick read. I definitely learned a lot about his accomplishments and the industries he was in. However at times it felt like the author was trying to 'win' the reader or convince us at how great Elon is rather than be unbiased.

These comments alone made me read this book. Also, I am attempting to work for Tesla so there's that as well. I just have to finish a book about Nat Turner and this book will then become my life. Finishing books is not a high point for me but it will be as I am discovering a very limited vocabulary over the years. Regrets on top of regrets, of course. A book about Elon Musk should keep maintain my attention. I miss Reading Rainbow. Get the book!!

Probably one of the best books i've read. 5 stars thumbs up!

The book is filled with heart racing, mind boggling facts and story about Elon Musk's history, present and future. This book is like a roller coaster ride and an absolutely inspiration for many people!

Definitely a must read!

I didn't know of or care about Musk, considered migration to Mars is, if not preposterous, far-fetched. Tesla was one incentive for me to pick up this book, as I (think I) am an environmentalist, and would be tempting to throw more money down the drain of solar/alt-energy and electric vehicles. So the book succeeded in educating and inspiring me. Musk is like no one else, contemporaries Jobs and Gates accomplished less. He's flawed, but I'm proud of living in his/our era, and I still prepare to die on earth.

Fantastic book! I went in knowing very little about Elon Musk. I really only knew of him as the CEO of Tesla but the book does a good job explaining to you his role in that company as well as Paypal and Space X in much more detail. He seems like a really intense guy, kind of a crossover between Steve Jobs (visionary) and Bill Gates (technical guru). One of the better books I have read this year!
