When his father dies, Carl Martin inherits a house in an increasingly rich and trendy London neighborhood. Carl needs cash, however, so he rents the upstairs room and kitchen to the first person he interviews, Dermot McKinnon. That was colossal mistake number one. Mistake number two was keeping his father's bizarre collection of homeopathic "cures" that he found in the medicine cabinet, including a stash of controversial diet pills. Mistake number three was selling fifty of those diet pills to a friend, who is then found dead.

Another gem from Ruth Rendell which is sadly her last book. This time instead of seeing things from a psychopath's perspective, we witness a seemingly ordinary man who due to an error in judgment becomes prey to a blackmailer and spirals down to emotional and moral darkness.

Disappointing read. Some of the storylines went nowhere.

Found this a very difficult book to read. There are far too many "coincidences" that simply beggar belief and the story jumps around in a very disjointed manner. I often read good books several times, but this is not one that I will be looking for again.

In this story, the bullies get murdered when all the bullied had to do was to say a forceable, "No!" Rendell provides the story of 3 characters who lives become interwoven. She shows how an ordinary, moral person can be driven to commit murder, but then can such a person live with that knowledge? Just short of 300 pages - an afternoon of easy reading, but frustrating as the male character doesn't know how to handle the situation he is in.

Another top read from Ruth Rendell. I read this book in 3 days because it had me in its grip from page 1. Easy to read at the same time as having her usual interweaving of characters that she expertly brings together to create a gripping novel.
