Give this book a few pages, and let it get under your skin. De Waal writes amazing scenes of his travel - back in history as well as inside cultures. He's exploring what wealth means, because porcelain, when it first appeared in cultures, was a symbol of wealth. He writes as an artistic anthropologist, and a poet.
