Ivan E. Coyote and Rae Spoon are accomplished, award-winning writers, musicians, and performers; they are also both admitted "gender failures." In their first collaborative book, a poignant collection of autobiographical essays, lyrics, and images, Ivan and Rae explore and expose their failed attempts at fitting into the gender binary, and how ultimately our expectations and assumptions around traditional gender roles fail us all.

This book is based on Spoon and Coyote’s live show of the same title. It contains the text of the stories they told as well as Spoon’s song lyrics, and some of the images from the show.

Gender Failure explores both of the authors experiences growing up and not fitting into the gender binary, and the ways in which they have found authentic identities as non-binary people. Both Coyote and Spoon are wonderful writers, and this book is an emotional read.

For some reason I found Ivan E Coyote super off-putting. I guess I must have read one essay I didn't like and written them off, and it turns out I shouldn't've. Charming, funny, tragic. The essays aren't all equally strong, but they weave together nicely. And they're funny! And charming!

Wonderful collection! Vulnerable, tough, painful, passionate, compassionate, and easy to read and understand. Often very humorous. Such an excellent book!

Honest, brave, interesting, and enlightening. I'd love to spend an evening with these folks.
