You MUST read _The Cape Ann_ before you read this sequel. Both books are wonderfully written and heart wrenching. The Cape Ann is early childhood of the narrator, Lark. Gardenias is her pre-teen and early teens. A powerful story of survival by a woman who fought for her right to work, to own a home, and to care for her child. Lark doesn't know her mother is heroic, but the reader will. Lark is an amazing child who makes her way in a world of deprivation and makes her own family from among the rag-tag members of a housing project at the start of WWII.
