I really enjoyed this junior chapter book, but more so for the beautiful scratch-work illustrations that are so detailed and full of little hidden images. The story is a fairy tale written by George MacDonald, and the artwork is done by Ruth Sanderson. It reminds me of a graphic novel, but with much more text.

A 19th century tale whose meaning seems to be to follow the advice of one's mentors for a successful life. Wouldn’t be worth recommending except for the beautiful, very elaborate scratch-board work of the current children’s book illustrator Ruth Sanderson.
