Desde este momento el autor entra a abordar ciertos detalles de la vida personal y familiar del Premio Nobel, que se sucederán a lo largo de la obra y que se intercalarán con la voz de su hijo, el guerrillero Rodrigo Asturias, alias Gaspar Ilom, que, al igual que su padre, representa una figura importantísima de Guatemala y Latinoamérica en el siglo x x.
