Season two of “The Affair” is . . . h’mmm . . . I can’t think of the right word . . . I’ll get it, just give me a moment . . . it’s . . . dreary! Yes, that’s it, it’s dreary. This show, in my opinion, needs to be leavened with the tiniest flicker of humor once in a while. Granted, there is nothing funny about having an affair and metaphorically blowing up two families, but, man, the show is so bleak and the characters are so emotionally wounded and unhappy, it can be kind of difficult to watch. I am reminded of an interview with Vince Gilligan, the creator of the fantastic “Breaking Bad”. Paraphrasing, he said a show about a guy with terminal cancer who becomes a drug kingpin, would be too dark without a comedic moment here and there, and that they consciously tried to insert a little levity into the story, when possible. This is missing from “The Affair”. It is well-acted and photographed, and the way they tell the same story from the differing points of view of the four main characters is an interesting method of storytelling. But everyone is just so danged unhappy, even when they get what they want. I’m not suggesting punchlines flying around everywhere; I am suggesting they lighten it up, just the slightest bit. There will still be plenty of lying and backstabbing and deceitfulness and bad behavior to move the story along.
