As far as high production Indian historical romance movies this movie nicely encapsulates it and I would suggest it as a 'primer' for getting into Indian movies. *At the very least*, as far as high production Indian historical romance movies this movie nicely encapsulates it and I would suggest it as a 'primer' for getting into Indian movies.
Big sets, big stars, interesting story. I wonder why he did not bring his second wife to war since she was a warrior herself.
I have seen a lot of swordfighting and historical movies in my day, and one thing that these types of movies should have is good pacing, storyline, and characters to care about. Right from the beginning, this movie throws you into war and some politics. Who is who? Two glaring things stand out to me: the pacing is way too fast, you cannot get involved or care about the characters, and the "crude" mix of 3D animation with live-acting does not appeal to me at all. I turned the movie off after watching 20-minutes because it gave me a headache.
I felt the two main characters lacked chemistry, it was unrealistic to me to have Deepika's character to fall madly in love within minutes of the movie and go from a strong warrior to a doormat desperate for his love despite the treatment from his family. Jodha Akbar was waaay better, their love grew from the uneasiness of being strangers to love by seeing each other in various situations and how they handled it. This did not give me that same feeling.
Visually, this was a beautifully filmed movie. I enjoyed Bijarao Mistani but there was a lot of similarities to Sanjay Bhansali's 2002 classic Devdas. Highlight has got to be Deepika Padukone's and Priyanka Chopra's dance together. That dance hit a home run just like the great duo dance of Madhuri Dixit Nene and Aishwarya Rai in Devdas. For sure Bhansali has the tragic star crossed lovers' theme down cold. It's a great movie but in the back of your mind you've seen the ending before.
I had high expectations given that it was a Sanjay Leela Bhansali production and high profile Bollywood actors. Sadly I think they missed the mark with this one. These good actors can only work with what they are given. Nonetheless time spent watching the movie was not completely wasted.
An almost perfect masterpiece. I just wish SLB didn't borrow so much from his past work to tell this tale but nevertheless aside from churning Deepika Padukone into a hopeless showpiece, he brought out great performances from Ranveer Singh (in his best work yet), Priyanka Chopra and Tanvi Azmi.
