"Now Barkus and Baby live with us. And we are a very, very happy family."

Told in five short chapters, Barkus is a story of friendship and family that will warm the hearts of readers. Boutavant's bright, 1960s style illustrations are full of charm. A perfect early chapter book for emergent readers. I look forward to book two in this new series!

Barkus is a fun addition to beginning chapter books that I recommend, made even better by the fact that it is the first book in a new series by Patricia MacLachlan, one of my favorite children's authors. Children who love animals and want to include them in their daily lives will enjoy Barkus the dog's adventures with Nicky and her family. It is especially charming when Barkus welcomes another animal friend into the family even tho he is a newcomer himself! At a second grade reading level, this title is for grades 1-4.
