Reality Show done right! This is a fascinating and horrific look into the slums of London in the 19th century. Each episode moves the families into a new decade, beginning in the 1860's. The families try to survive the realistic living and working conditions of the era. Visually seeing the conditions and watching the families make difficult decisions was very impactful to see. It was interesting to see how conditions changed with each decade.

I highly recommend this series to anyone with an interest in learning about the east-end slums of London. This isn't a crappy American reality tv show, it has substance.

This re-enactment of conditions in the slums of London, England in the last four decades of the Victorian era really brought out the terrible conditions under which the poor and destitute of England were forced to live. It would have been equally as difficult in other parts of Britain. An excellent and educational view of the standards under which people were forced to live and endure. Hard to believe that in the same city was a Queen who basically had no idea of what was going on having been brought up in regal standards her whole life. Brought up to to-day, in many parts of the world, people are still falling prey to those of higher birth and the greed of money.

Just excellent...while historical fiction helps one understand the living conditions on 19th century London, there is something about watching contemporary people manage in these conditions that really brings the experience home. And of course, I'm reminded of the truth that people still do live like this, just not within my view. No point in being appalled at extremes of wealth in the past and ignoring those of the present. Maybe this would be an idea for a new reality show...

An excellent reality show for those who like history. Victorian Slum House takes you back in time from the 1860's to 1900's and demonstrates the reality of those who were poor in Victorian London. We often see the 'movie' or 'happy' side of living from this time, and forget about how those who were less fortunate had to live. Definitely a must see and very educational.

Victorian Slum House is a reality show recreating life as it changed in the London slums over five decades, in the tradition of such shows as 1900 House, 1940s House, and Manor House. Unfortunately, the show - despite being very well-made and featuring a seemingly genuinely invested and generally likable cast - falls rather flat. Despite many built-in opportunities for conflict there is very little, which helps keep the cast sympathetic but also makes the program less interesting. In place of conflict the program features regular appearances by historians who deliver lectures on the period, telling rather than showing. More strange is the show's treatment of the Victorian past as an alien world almost entirely unrelated to the present, which reaches the height of absurdity when several of the reenactors express outrage that nineteenth century people would pay to tour the slums - never seemingly connecting this with the twenty-first century willingness to watch reality TV shows set in the slums. Still, for all its flaws, the show is educational, and far better than most of what is on TV.

A reality show about living in the Victorian slums? Yes! Really interesting if you like social and class history, or if you want to watch modern Londoners trying to live on pennies a day.
