Where did Stefan Zweig get his reputation as a serious author? It certainly isn't in this miserable soap opera masquerading as masterpiece theatre. The hack director, Patrice Leconte, must share a good deal of the blame for the main actors (Rickman, Hall) being totally sexless and unbelievable. In addition, Rebecca Hall would seem to be more fitting for an English soaper rather than a Germanic one.
For some reason, this movie has been confused with a totally different movie called "The Promise". Are the reviewers whacked out or is it the library system?

Directed by Terry George in 2016, this historical drama depicts a love triangle during and through the Armenian Genocide.
Apparently the director seems to make the audience pay attention to the genocide rather than making money.
Such being the case, an outstanding cast and powerful real-life story fail to engage the audience in this love triangle story.
In any case, the Armenian Genocide appears like the Holocaust.

It took an Armenian multi-millionaire to finance this film that deals with the Ottoman Empire's (Turkey's) genocide of Armenians. The film tells the story of the genocide, but for some reason the mixing of the romance of the main protagonists did not feel right. Genocide deniers (55,000 people suspected of being anti-Armenian) ran a campaign of voting only 1 star on the IMDb website to diminish its rating, probably, thereby reducing the audience and sales such that it was one of the biggest film losers of the year. Unfortunately more important losers were the millions of Americans who will never know or admit that the Armenian genocide did exist.

A love story set against the Armenian genocide. Touching contrast of the good life before the war, and the awful trials as the Ottoman Empire crumbles and the majority turns on the minorities. No one is immune--a Turkish playboy reluctantly turned med student finds himself increasingly embroiled. A local Armenian tribe's final mountain stand and miraculous French intercession (with the naval Admiral deliberately disobeying orders to ignore the desperate refugees) is based on true events. There is a coda that is quietly inspiring as far as never giving up hope. Not suitable for children due to torture/murder scenes.

A good story.

In order to attract audience, movie has “love triangle” tag line....but, that is not what you want to see in this movie. It is a story about Armenian genocide that should be clearly stated and everything else is just secondary.

A very informative film. Well acted. I'd heard about the tragic Armenian Holocaust but this put it into clear understanding.

Beautifully written, directed and acted with captivating performances from beginning to end, tells the true tale of a race of people who only wanted to live, dance, sing, work and praise in peace but were forcebly ousted from every country that until then had welcomed them. Oddly, as an actor of the stage this is the same story our theater just attempted to portray this Fall, falling sadly short. We should have just gone to the movies instead.

Truly a masterful movie. When billionaire Kirk Kerkorian OWNED MGM he couldn’t get this movie made. He finally just paid for it himself. I’m glad he waited. I can’t imagine anyone else but Oscar Isaac in the role. Best advice, learn the history after watching the movie. I felt the same suspense I got when watching Masada years ago without knowing the history. (wiki the history on Masada instead). I really didn’t know know how this movie would end. Suffice it to say the journey is worth every minute.
I had to make a note about one review . “ Started well, but became too violent and brutal with the genocide of the Armenians.”
Wow.....Schindler’s list was a great movie until they started loading people on trains.

Many of the comments here are about the film "The Promise" not this one - a slight difference in the title but an important one to note - "A Promise."

Our village sat high in the mountains of Southern Turkey. It was half Turk, half Armenian.
You're not a Turk. Armenians have to apply in their hometown.
The Armenians are a tumor in our midst, Emre. Do you understand?
Involving the mass arrest of intellectuals, bankers and clergy. It does appear to be an attempt to stifle and silence the Armenian population.
Who are you to spread such rumors?
-Right now... Outside of Siroun... You'll find the bodies of every Armenian from my village rotting in a river. Every man, woman and child marched from their home, brought there and slaughtered, all of them. My father. My wife. Stabbed, slashed open. Our unborn child ripped from her womb. You don't believe me?
Hmm? Go. Go look for yourself. Follow the vultures and the smell.

I made a promise. I... can't go back on that, uncle.
He's a spy. And he has used journalism to smear the ottoman empire and its soldiers around the world with his fabrication about the relocation of the Armenians.
We will build a future together, Maral and I. And we will grow to love each other.
And you will be proud of us.
I fell in love with someone. I can't do this. I can't marry Maral.
-You have to marry Maral. Whatever happened, that was another life.
Our revenge will be to survive.
My darling Yeva told me that her greatest wish was that her parents and our dear Ana were here. I told her I know that they are. For sure, they are here. And all of your parents and all those families lost in an attempt to wipe our nation from the face of the earth. But we're still here. We're still here.
