After the humiliating theft of the Death Star plans and the destruction of the battle station, the Empire is on the defensive. But not for long. In retaliation, the elite Imperial soldiers of Inferno Squad have been called in for the crucial mission of infiltrating and eliminating the Partisans—the rebel faction once led by notorious Republic freedom fighter Saw Gerrera.

Following the death of their leader, the Partisans have carried on his extremist legacy, determined to thwart the Empire—no matter the cost. Now Inferno Squad must prove its status as the best of the best and take down the Partisans from within. But the growing threat of being discovered in their enemy’s midst turns an already dangerous operation into a do-or-die acid test they dare not fail. To protect and preserve the Empire, to what lengths will Inferno Squad go . . . and how far beyond them?

The Rebellion may have heroes like Jyn Erso and Luke Skywalker. But the Empire has Inferno Squad.

Inferno Squad is a prequel to the Battlefront II game that came out a few months ago. It starts out after the battle of Yavin and introduces the main character Iden Versio, (who happens to be one the few survivors of the Death Star explosion), and a few others who form the team called Inferno Squad. This book focuses on one of their early missions that has the team becoming undercover agents and attempting to get rid of the last remaining Partisans. (Saw Gerrera's version of rebels). Throughout the course of the book, the characters discover that their mission is not as easy as they originally thought as they face all kinds of challenges by working with the rebel group.
Inferno Squad is definitely interesting as it goes from the point of view of hard core Imperials. (This is something I don't normally see in Star Wars books, maybe with the exception of Mara Jade). I liked that this book was fast paced, short, and easy to read and understand, and I also thought the all the members of the squad, particularly Iden got some good character development. The only main criticism I have was the crazy amount of swearing in this novel.
But beside that, I think that this book was fun to read and it made me actually want to play the game. (And, this cover is pretty cool!)

Pretty interesting, but (unlike the cover) there isn't much fighting compared to Battlefront Twilight Company. More of an undercover, behind enemy lines thing.

This is a fantastic addition to the Star Wars universe. EA nonsense aside, the campaign in Battlefront II is engaging and wonderfully crafted. While you don't have to have played the game to enjoy this, the backstory that Golden spins for Iden and her squadmates adds a level of depth to the game that made me want to immediately replay the campaign, armed with the knowledge from the novel. I highly recommend the audiobook version, which was narrated by Janina Gavankar- the voice of Iden in the game- who embodies everything the character stands for and quickly became one of my favorite characters from the new canon.

Excellent book. One of the best in new canon so far. A prequel to the new Battlefront II coming out this November, it's a good story with some nice twists and turns and good characterization.
