Judi Dench is one of my favourite actresses, her role of Victioria was portrayed to make you believe she was the Queen herself!

What's not to love? Judi Dench, a cadre of great British actors, a fun story
(mostly true as noted at the beginning of the movie), humor, poignancy, and a look at a mostly unknown part of British royal history. See it!!

Judi Dench does it again! Before watching this, I knew very little about the later years of Queen Victoria. This movie does an excellent job of not only creating a plot that intrigues the viewer, but pretty accurately portraying many of the historical events/characters it focuses on. The film deals with the issue of prejudice, ignorance, and imperial suppression without straying too far from the focus; the unusual friendship between Queen Victoria and Abdul. It was wonderful to see such a warm relationship develop between two very different individuals. Victoria all but adopted Abdul as another son, something which created a great deal of tension within the Royal Household. Judi Dench is excellent as Queen Victoria, and the pace is not as slow as I thought it may have been. A great depiction of the way that a little kindness can open someone's world.

It seems this story almost disappeared from history due to racism and to prevent scandal.

Excellently produced, all on location. Be sure to watch the bonus features! Performers were very convincing in their roles...And Dame Judy Dench was superb!

This is a delightful docu-drama. The prologue mentioned that it was "mostly" true so I don't know how much of this was an elaboration. Still, it was a great slice of history notably for the fact that the death of Victoria ended the Victorian Age and so this punctuated the decline of the English Empire, not the least was the emancipation of India. The story revolves around Victoria's doting of Abdul which seemed to give her a new lease on life when she was growing bored of the trappings of English nobility. Abdul only showed up initially to present her with a token award of their appreciation and ended up staying for 15 years as a side fancy of hers. Judi Dench, Ali Fazal and Eddie Izzard are so fortunate to have around for these roles as they seem perfect. Watch this and you won't be disappointed.
