Learn to tie decent knots! Build a fire! Make a lovely studio apartment from available resources and at a low monthly cost! It's all found in the Basic Wilderness Survival Skills book. It's like the Boy Scout guides of yesteryear! (I haven't been that age for a long time, not that I ever joined that group. Uniforms? No thank you!)

Anyway, back to the book. It's a well-organized primer on How Not to Die of Exposure for most possible climates and conditions. It is better geared toward temperate regions rather than the desert, but most of the tips apply anywhere. Footwear, the right backpack, first aid, and more is covered. Much of it is at the common sense level of proficiency, but not everyone is there yet. After reading this, you'll be able to pontificate about the best way to build a rough shelter while your campmates will be busy building it. Maybe even the correct way.
