In September 1910, during the celebration of the Centennial, President Porfirio Díaz is celebrating both his eightieth birthday and thirty years in power. They have been three decades of paternalistic rule, and of peace, order and progress; however, these years also represent a repressive regime controlled by the landed gentry, a time in which there is no political freedom, but instead marked social inequality. After a fraudulent election, Díaz's opponent Francisco I. Madero plans an uprising: on November 20, Madero and ten men cross the frontier of Rio Bravo, where they meet with an army ready to start the revolution.
