Strange the Dreamer was such a perfect fantasy novel, and then...the ending. Minya was so horrible, and with the death of Sarai, and Minya's ability to hold her spirit and hold that over Lazlo, I couldn't see my way to a happy ending. And then Muse started and suddenly we're off on some world where it's freezing and the women are sent out to slaughter the sea creatures their tribe will live on. Wait, what? What happened to Sarai and Lazlo?! How will this be fixed?! But as usual, Taylor not only delivers the goods, she gives a reader everything we could hope for and more. Trust me, the end of this one will have fans of Taylor squealing with delight.

Godspawn Ruby, Feral and Sparrow are less central to this story, but their love-triangle/growing pains are still part of the story, and as they learn from watching Lazlo come into his powers. As the The godspawn, including Sarai, begin to question everything they've known; making discoveries both heartbreaking and empowering. Even Nero, down in the city of Weep learns more about belonging and teamwork (which sounds really cheesy, but isn't written that way). And finally, we come back to the two women at the start of the story, Kora and Nova, and how far one has come to find the other. I found this part of the story a bit overwrought, but it helped the characters to understand the larger universe in which they live, which opens all sorts of doors for stories to come.

Taylor pushes and pulls us between the extremes of love and hate at every turn. How can Sarai love a father who killed so many children? How can Minya hold on to her hate year after year? Can Eril-Fane ever forgive himself in a city that sees his actions as heroic? In the end, as usual, Taylor gives us a story about forgiveness and hope that is absolutely lyrical in its language and uplifting in its conclusions. Taylor is the master of the modern day fairytale; transporting us to amazing new worlds that could be just around the corner. Her writing is nothing short of magical.
