A classic movie, but not great

This edition of "Saturday Night Fever" is the Director's Cut on the movie's 40th anniversary. The features are a 70s Discopedia that explains references and other trivia in words while the movie plays, a deleted scene of Tony and Stephanie in a car where he gets overly fresh with her, and a music feature that has input from the Bee Gees that was terrific. There are other features, but these are the highest on my list.

40 years ago, I loved it. This week, I turned it off early.
Maybe I'm getting old.

This movie was not good. The plot was all over the place. The acting was terrible. It was offensive in every way: sexist, racist, had a rape scene, and a death scene. If I could give it no stars I would.

Disco here. Disco there. Disco-Disco, everywhere.

Well, folks, in case you're at all interested - (When it comes to "Disco" flicks) - This is the one that started all the fever (and, pretty much, ended it all, too, in a cold-sweat). For many, Saturday Night Fever (SNF, for short) was the be-all, and end-all - The perfect crossover combination between movie and music.

In the mid-70's, at the supreme height of the disco-craze, SNF blazed like fury across the silver screen. Its path was not unlike that of a scorching laser-light fragmented into kaleidoscope-dreams from a giant disco-ball.

Accompanied by the ultimate soundtrack from the towering, heart-thumping rhythms of Australia's Bee Gees - SNF was unanimously voted the youth movie-event of the decade. SNF set the fevered pace for many a copycat film to follow.

Across the nation, at every disco-station, white, polyester suits with wide-collared shirts became the instant fashion craze. Disco-Law forbade the use of Brylcreme in your hair. Dance-Floor ordinance made it mandatory to blow dry your coif to absolute perfection, and, then, spray it to a super-stiff, helmet-hardness.

From a "bit-part nobody" to an instant "mega-superstar" - John Travolta, didn't waste much time becoming the hottest movie-actor alive. Many adored him. Many abhorred him. What a difference one movie can make.

I saw this movie 40 years ago and loved it, loved it again when I saw it recently. I am surprised that they got away with some of the language back then. The dancing was phenomenal, John Travolta looked so good and his moves - what can I say!!

I didn't see this when it came out. Just saw it. It's a gross, vulgar, racist movie with great songs and some excellent dancing. I much prefer Dirty Dancing!

I think this is one of Travolta's best movies.

Had heard lots about this movie but hadn't seen it until now. Well worth the wait!

I concur with britprincess1. Back in the day, when this movie was new, I did not see it - could not afford the price of a ticket and this was way before all our present movie delivery systems we now have. Finally, I decided to watch it courtesy of SPL and found it utterly dreadful. I am long past the days when vulgarity is entertaining so clearly you need to see this when you can relate to the characters as your contemporaries. I still like the BeeGees' music however.
