I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this book. Unfortunately it does not measure up to the authors previous works. I was disappointed and I hope her next book will be better received by her fans.

Rather disappointing: given the author's earlier work, I was expecting a thriller with a surprise ending. This is a rather bizarre S&M ghost story with a predictable ending. None of it made sense to me. I respect an author's desire to explore different genres. Using a nom de plume would prevent faithful readers of her earlier work (Rizzoli & Isles) from being unpleasantly surprised.

Review excerpt: "'The Shape of Night' by Tess Gerritsen is a ridiculous book. I had hoped that it would transcend into glorious F+ grade territory, but sadly, despite all of its WTFery, it doesn’t. I also thought it might be romantic suspense, but it’s not. 'The Shape of Night' is a thriller with erotic and paranormal elements (BDSM ghost sex, for real) but it fails to stick the landing on the thriller portion, it isn’t particularly erotic, and the paranormal world building doesn’t make sense. It was supremely disappointing."

NOT at all “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir”. Nor what I expected from Tess Gerritsen. Nothing to enjoy here, unless you’re into S & M, shallow characters and fairly good architectural description.

I have enjoyed reading most of the other books by Tess Gerritsen especially the Rizzoli and Isle series. I did not enjoy reading this one. Not fond of stories with a ghost that saves the day. More of a book for teenagers. In my opinion not one of her better reads.
