Lillian and Madison were unlikely, yet inseparable friends at their boarding school. Then Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal, and they have barely spoken since. Years later, Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help. Madison's twin stepkids are moving in, and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker. However, there's a catch: the twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it's the truth. Thinking of the life that has consistently disappointed her, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other while also staying out of the way of Madison's uptight husband. Surprised by her intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lillian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need her. Could this be the start of the amazing life she'd always hoped for?-- Publisher's description.

So, so good. I wanted to be longer so I could spend more time with the great writing and with these characters, but really it's perfect as is.

Makes you want to get to the finish, and a quick read, but didn't seem to be a story worth stretching to novel length. This writer has good reviews for other of his titles, so I'll try one of those. Hopefully this is the low end of his ability - I hope so, because this book, although entertaining, isn't a LOL work as the review blurbs suggest, but more of a 'I started reading this so I'm willing to get to the end' title.

so intentionally quirky and weird but also oddly endearing.

The narrator has a heart large enough to overlook the poverty and betrayals of her own childhood and focus on nurturing two neglected children to health.

A peculiar and haunting novel about a young woman whose wealthy former roommate recruits her to care for her step-children, who periodically burst into flames. Recommend to fans of Katherine Dunn, Elizabeth McCracken, Aimee Bender and Sayaka Murata.

Unexpected and enthralling. Too good to put down.

A bizarre tail with roots in reality. Tells the story of children who spontaneously combust, and their relationship with a troubled woman who is asked to care for them. Has things to say about what is normal, about about class in our society, particularly the South. Liked it a bunch, and read it in a few days, fast for me.

Such an imaginative and original novel! The story is outrageous , funny, and at times heartbreaking. It is a tale about "trying to fit in", which I think every reader can relate to in some way.

One of my favourite books of the year, Nothing to See Here is funny, heart-felt and extremely well written.

And if I'd driven to the basket right then, I would have hit an easy layup, but I let her recover. I drove and then did my... And when Madison felt that pressure from me, that movement, she turned and ran to the basket, too... I was about to reach it when I felt something hard slam into my face, and all these stars blasted into my head, this stinging pain... 'She hit you in the face,' Bessie said, 'with her elbow.' 'It was an accident, of course,' Madison said. 'shit, I'm sorry, Lillian.'
