A mixed-heritage dancer's coming of age within the African diaspora is shaped by abuse at the hands of a cousin, her mother's descent into addiction, and her father's efforts to create a Nigerian-inspired home in America.
"Ada" means first daughter, means oldest girl, means most pressure. When Ada leaves home for her freshman year at a historical Black college, it's the first time that she's been able to make her own choices. As she stumbles deeper into the world of dance and explores her sexuality, she also begins to wrestle with her past-- her mother's struggle with addiction, her Nigerian father's attempts to make a home for her. Will she find the courage to shape a life of her own? -- adapted from jacket

A complex and often heartbreaking coming of age novel. Ada, a Nigerian American teen leaves her well-meaning, but repressive, religious Nigerian father and her estranged mother, for college away from home. A thread of childhood and adolescent loneliness courses through the story. Ada is one of the only persons of color in her private school on Chicago’s north side; she suffers from an unresolved incident of child molestation from an older relative while staying at her maternal grandmother’s home; she longs for an unachievable closeness with her mother. Ada is also caught between two cultures: Nigerian and Black American. Written beautifully in verse, the story toggles between flashbacks and real time where Ada eventually finds her voice and reclaims her body through her passion for dance.
