I read this rather sentimental and trite coming of age novel for one reason and that is that it inspired one of my favorite series: George MacDonald Fraser's rousing, sardonic, and badly behaved Flashman series. Flashman appears as the school bully and Fraser brilliantly built a long-running series around this ne'er do well. So for the serious Flashman fan, this is of interest, but it will hardly appeal to anyone else, as it's preachy and dull. Originally published in 1857.
