An elaboration on one of the most important and beloved Albanian folktales, Konstandin and Doruntine. A groom from a far away land asks the only daughter of an Albanian family in marriage. The family initially refuses, citing the distance. Then the son, Konstandin gives his word to bring Doruntine back. But he dies before he can do so. Not one to break his word he rises from the grave to do so. The novel is done in a crime mystery style, with the local captain of the guard as the narrator and protagonist. And yet no crime has been committed. Except in the eyes of those in power.
