Just finished watching Season 4 of “Ray Donovan”, and as entertainment, it works okay. As long as you do not find high body counts bothersome. Liev Schreiber portrays the titular character, and he has apparently studied at the Clint Eastwood School for Squinty-eyed, Laconic, Monosyllabic, Kill-Only-Those-Who-Deserve-To-Be-Killed, Anti-Heroes. Ray Donovan is really just a criminal thug scumbag in a nice suit (sans tie, of course). The producers of the show want the audience to think that Ray is good guy deep inside, and has good reasons for the nasty things he does. He is providing for, and protecting his family; he was sexually abused as a child by a priest; his ex-con degenerate father, an even worse scumbag, didn’t show him enough love; blah, blah, blah . . . come on, at some point someone who really is a good person should do the right thing, don’t you think? Well, Ray has not reached that point just yet. And speaking of the father . . . Jon Voight’s Mickey Donovan has been nothing but trouble for his family ever since he was sprung from prison in Season 1. I have an idea for the producers of “Ray Donovan” that they are welcome to use, gratis, if they ever want to start Ray’s redemption process. Have Mickey Donovan’s lifeless body be found in a rat infested alley. Since so many people have a motive to off dear old Mickey, it would be difficult to pin his death on anyone in particular. Perhaps then, Ray Donovan could begin to make peace with his tortured soul.
