Season 4 of FX’s 1980’s spy-thriller, “The Americans”, is a fine way to spend 13 or so hours. I have always liked how “The Americans” tells this story from the Russian point of view. Having some supporting characters speak Russian certainly makes it seem more realistic. In the olden days, shows that featured characters that were something other than American, had those characters speaking accented English. Well, that’s not going to cut it anymore. True, “The Americans” is produced for an English speaking audience and subtitles can be kind of cumbersome and distracting, but having Russians speaking Russian-accented English would make them sound like Boris and Natasha from the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. I like shows that make an effort to give the illusion of realism. “The Americans” does this pretty well, although I used to wonder who was watching the kids when Phillip and Elizabeth would go out at night to do their spy stuff. Season 4 begins with the fallout from the big reveal at the end of Season 3. And, the local FBI guys have a situation unfolding right under their noses. Plus, it seems that Phillip and Elizabeth might be having the faintest stirrings of doubt about spying for the USSR by posing as Americans. This underrated show does an excellent job of weaving the various story lines so that the episodes flow naturally and believably. Season 4 of “The Americans” rates a thumbs up, for sure.
