I watched “Hap and Leonard” Season 1, mainly because one of the stars is Michael Kenneth Williams. I know that if he’s in it, I’ll see an excellent performance, no matter what else is going on around him. In this show, he plays Leonard and his friend is Hap, ably portrayed by James Purefoy. “Hap and Leonard” is a “buddy” show, about two seemingly mismatched, kind of down-on-their-luck guys getting in on a grand money-making scheme/adventure. Based on Joe Lansdale’s Hap and Leonard series of novels, Season 1 of the show is only 6 episodes long, which, for me, is not long enough to flesh out these characters as much as I would have liked. For example, the story of Hap and Leonard’s close, almost brotherly relationship is told in brief flashbacks interspersed throughout the main story. I would like to have seen more of that storyline. And, some of the actions of the characters seemed improbable, but I’m trying to stop criticizing shows for their improbable moments (although, I guess that is what I just did) because they all have them. I do not mean to give the impression that I disliked the show (I gave it 3 stars). It had some very good performances, especially Michael Kenneth Williams and Jimmi Simpson, and I recommend it, but the story could have used a bit more depth. Just so you know.
