Adam March has it all - he is a self-made man - with a high-powered executive career, a beautiful wife, an accomplished teenage daughter, a well-appointed home and all the right friends. One day his secretary leaves him a memo “Your sister called” and, overwrought by feelings that he has sublimated for many years, he slaps her…..and loses everything. Fast forward - Adam is living in a tiny apartment, he has no job, no money, his wife hates him, his daughter scorns him and of course his “friends” are all gone. And, he is doing his community service in a soup kitchen for the homeless. In the same neighbourhood, a pit bull lives in a squalid basement, only brought out to fight in illegal and brutal dog fights. Chapter by chapter, these two down-and-out, lost souls each tell their stories. Through a random series of events, Adam and the pit bull, Chance, end up living together and what begins as a begrudging tolerance for one another evolves into love, devotion and an aching need for each other’s safety and happiness. Fans of Garth Stein’s The Art of Racing in the Rain might also enjoy this title.
