What stands out for me about Shannara, the movie, besides the incredible scenary all the way through, are all the different shades and forms of magic, well played out visually albeit with some occasional contradiction in principle, a great deal of blood (in contrast to the depth of certain other elements), and all the leading role strong women with their mix of power and frailty, as well as leading men who are sensitive loving men as well. The acting may not always be superior, but there are many actors, and some depth is developed with the core crew. And they are younger more often than older. And the never ending twists and turns, lots of loss and "darkness," including death of so many we might rather have live to the end, or at least half-way. Possibly a bit heavy on the sacrifice thing? . Basic Setting: In all good planetary shifts from one evolution of souls to another, the trials after the transition to the post-destruction era is rife with conflict between the human potentialists and the dominator warrior types. There's all in between as "types" go and over time organized cultures develop that usually are a more or less working blend, plus those that have special abilities, some of whom find themselves in power roles- for good, ill, or usually some blend of both, but there's also some extremists (who always show us where the edges and boundaries are, right?) Enter the shamans, priests, wise folk, record-keepers, teachers and healers, including the power-abusers and the heroes & heroines. . There is a certain emphasis on learning how to master one's Multi-level capacities while also discovering one's FATE. Which is often played out via a mental element of magical or spiritual perspective, in opposition to the emotional elements, human and/or spiritual, depending on one's perspective. Which difference might be a consideration, as relates to what in some eastern perspectives is called the condition of "attachment to detachment." Which opposition and paradox engages learning to maintain the larger perspective (of all the above, including first paragraph) and the greater purpose while (as the movie is) also deeply exploring a surprising depth of Love and all the pain that goes with it (that ever-prevalent element of sacrifice). Food for thought in any case. . And I thought that element of opposition or paradox might have been better rendered, if you will. But so many elements of books to represent (I'm guessing), and so far I have only seen the 2nd series, and am very much looking forward to the third (of how many needed to represent all those great books?).
