In chapter three, “Tracking Monsters” explains how gila monsters are tracked by scientists who use radio transmitters to study this protected species as it wanders through the desert. The close-up photographs of the scientists measuring every part of a gila monster’s body are incredible. Also fascinating is a chapter called “Counting Cacti,” which focuses on a study of Saguaro cacti during a ‘Bioblitz’ day, a 24-hour survey of species in Tucson’s Saguaro National Park. Volunteers and Tucson High School students counted the number of Saguaro cacti in the park, tallied their numbers of nesting holes and arms, and measured their heights. A very enlightening book on the southwestern desert for ages 10 - 14. Show less
