It does not surprise me at all that Natasha Trethewey was previously the United States Poet Laureate (twice, to be specific). The subject matter is heartbreaking and wrenching. Her writing style is exquisite, beautiful. I found myself not breathing a few times as I listened to her descriptions of events and conversations. I don't read a lot of poetry (and this one is not written as a poem), but after listening to her read her memoir, I just placed holds on everything she's written. If I could give this 10 stars, I would.
