I have always struggled to pick up non-fiction works about the Holodomor: the famine/genocide that took millions of lives in Ukraine in the 1930s. As a Ukrainian-American whose grandparents emigrated to the U.S. immediately after WWII, I find it emotionally difficult to read about this chapter in the history of my ancestors. However, Marsh tells the story of the Holodomor in such an engaging way and through such sympathetic, beautifully-developed characters that I found myself totally engaged in this YA novel. I highly recommend it to both young readers and adults.
