Everybody who’s been around little children is probably familiar with their questions. “Why do I have to eat this broccoli?” your dear Janet asks. “Because it’s good for you,” you answer for the millionth time. “But, why?” Janet demands. “Well...uh, because… I don’t know! Just eat it!” Questions kids ask can be annoying, repetitive, and drive us crazy. But in the end, one child’s question saves a shopping mall full of people from the evil Doctor X-Ray in local author Adam Rex’s book Why?, illustrated by Claire Keane. Designed for the beginning reader, this classic David versus Goliath tale is sure to amuse and delight. When Dr. X-Ray threatens a mall full of shoppers with his x-ray gun, everyone flees for safety-except a little girl, who innocently asks him “Why?” Though he’s surprised, he answers her. Through his responses to her constant “Why?” questions, the reader learns about his childhood and why Dr. X-Ray turned to tyranny. Her questions cause him to pause and reconsider his actions. As Dr. X-Ray says at the end of the book “I could take over the world….but why?” If you have a curious kid who is from three to five years old, check out Why? today! --Olivia, a PCPL Virtual Volunteer
