Jewish American Heritage Month: An "Immeasurable Impact"

Imagine physics without Einstein*, feminism without Betty Friedan or Gloria Steinem, pop music without Carole King, rock and roll without Bob Dylan, punk rock without Joey Ramone, American literature without JD Salinger or Saul Bellow, children's lit without Maurice Sendak, journalism without Carl Bernstein, American jurisprudence without Louis Brandeis, queer theory without Judith Butler, comedy without . . . well, take your pick! Kind of impossible, right? The contributions of American Jews to American culture—and, by extension, global culture—are tremendous and often foundational. As President Biden's proclamation says, "We celebrate the immeasurable impact of Jewish values, contributions, and culture on our Nation’s character." This list is a bit of a hodge-podge: fiction, nonfiction, music, and film by or about notable Jews or touching on some aspect of Jewish-American life and culture. Consider it the tip of a wonderful iceberg. *Okay, he wasn't technically an American, but you get my point.
